Save Time at the Grocery Store

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

If you'd like to save a bit of time in the grocery store, prepare in advance. Pick a regular store and get to know it well. You'll save time picking up the sugar if you know what aisle it is in. Once you know the store, you can make a grocery list that follows the aisles. This is done simply by writing down the aisle order the next time you're at the store. With this type of list in hand, you won't have to back track for a certain item.

Shop when the store is least crowded. Some are open 24 hours and a late night excursion might fit your schedule better. At the checkout, pack the canned goods in one bag and the freezer items in another. This will expedite the unpacking when you get home.

Cook Up Some Extra Time

When preparing a meal, make a bit extra and freeze it for another day. Or spend one afternoon each week freezing several meals for those hectic weekday nights.

Keep in mind the kind of food you're using. Some foods don't freeze as well as others. For instance, shrimp should be a bit undercooked when you freeze it so it doesn't overcook when you reheat it. Invest in some good containers that you can easily label. Put the date on the label of each container as you fill it.

Use care when putting hot food in the freezer. You could partially thaw an item next to it. It's probably best to let your meal cool on the counter before freezing it.

Checklist For Safe Barbeques

Barbeques can be fun but meat sometimes harbors harmful bacteria.

To reduce the risk of foodborne illness, follow these guidelines:

  • Choose foods that seem to be fresh, appropriately frozen or cold, undamaged and unopened.
  • At home, chill foods immediately in a refrigerator set below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (F) or freeze them at 0 degrees or lower. Thaw frozen foods in the fridge or microwave, rather than on thecountertop.
  • Don't think that you need to rinse raw meat (or fish or poultry).
  • If you do rinse, clean the sink carefully afterward. Prepare meat an produce on separate cutting boards and in separate places. Andremember to cook meat to the recommended temperature.
  • Regularly disinfect the sink, countertop, cutting boards, sponges and dishcloths, especially after you've handled raw meat. Following these simple precautions can help make your summer barbeques safe as well as fun.
