If you can boil water and open a can, you can too can do this. Don't ask me why my kids think this is so great, but they do and I'm glad.
Here is what you need to have available
Macaroni Noodles
Cream of Mushroom Soup
Tuna Fish
Boiling Water
Big Sauce Pan and spoon.
When we make this for five of us (four kids and I, none of the mom types like it we double the "recipe" below:
Find a large sauce pan and fill it about 3/4 full with water. Throw in a large pinch of salt. I'm not sure exactly what the salt does, but my Mom always taught me to do that whenever I cooked noodles or boiled potatoes... don't ask me why and ignore at your own peril.
Put your large pan of salty water on some heat and wait for it to boil. This is usually when I have the younger kids opening up the cans of soup and tuna fish. Let them use the old hand crank can opener if you have one... it kills time while you're waiting for
the water, and its hilarious to watch.
Once the water is boiling put 6-8 ozs of macaroni noodles into the boiling water. You'll want to turn the heat down some, or it will boil over and make a bigger mess than the one the kids made opening the can of tuna.
After about 10-12 minutes the noodles should be done. Test them by eating one. Make sure each of your assistant cooks also get to taste test the noodles. (Warning: If you leave a taste tester out, you will need to start all over if you go beyond this point.)
Once all testers are satisfied that indeed the noodles are finally done it is time to drain the water off the noodles. It's a real sign of maturity when the kids are trusted for the first time going solo on the boiling water. I let the younger ones find the bowl-with-all-the-holes-in-it-that-the-noodles-go-in-to. If you can't find, don't have, or not sure how to use one of those, then figure out a way to poor out the water without pouring out the noodles. Holding a plate or the lid works if you don't slip or burn yourself. If the noodles do slip into the sink, don't worry about it. Just put them back into the pan as if that is what you intended all along.
Ok now here is the hard part, that only the kids can do well.
Dump the Cream of Mushroom Soup and Tuna Fish into the pan with the remaining cooked and drained noodles. Don't drain the tuna, just put it all in (it adds flavor...really) Get that big spoon I said you needed and stir it all up until the Tuna is all busted up and the soup is all over the noodles.
There you go. Tuna Stuff.
Now at this point you are going to be tempted to add to this or do more to it. Resist the temptation. Others have tried adding peas, put cheese on top and baking it, put potato chips on top and baking it. All attempts at dressing this up have met with resounding disapproval.
One notable exception to this rule is melted cheese. However the cheese must be carefully placed on the Tuna Stuff and melted in the microwave in individual servings. I suspect that this is because cheese is so cool to watch melt in the microwave, but they insist they really like it this way.
